Radnor Reflections, August 24, 2011

We have watched this plant develop over the past week, first just pretty leaves, then tiny blossoms that finally opened, and then the curving pods that give the plant its name. Not surprisingly, it is a member of the Bean family (Senna obtusifolia), about three feet tall, and with an unpleasant odor. Tea may be brewed from the seeds, giving the plant its alternate names of Coffee Weed and Java Bean. If ingested, however, the seeds are poisonous, which makes the brewed tea idea seem not so good.
